Who is Hallie Gay Walden Bagley?

Hallie Gay Walden Bagley, known as the “essay whisperer” is a college admission essay and application coach.

Hallie Bagley has always had a love for learning and growing. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dartmouth College in English Literature and she also holds a Juris Doctorate from Columbia University. After obtaining these impressive degrees, she went on to editing short stories and books which laid the foundation for her being able to coach the college admissions essays of students successfully.

Before deciding she was passionate about helping students hone their skills and release their great ideas, Mrs. Bagley worked as an editor at The Paris Review, the esteemed literary quarterly operating in New York City and founded by George Plimpton.  While working at The Paris Review for several years, Hallie Gay worked with numerous writers who had skillsets ranging from new to established.

Those who have had the pleasure of working with Hallie Gay Walden Bagley describe her as “the person they needed to free themselves to break through their creative roadblocks to produce creative gems that they didn’t even know they had in them to write”.

About Hallie Gay Walden Bagley’s Upbringing

Most people find Hallie Gay to be full of life, compassionate, and like a long lost friend.

Despite being the founder of SmartWriting and having successfully edited both books and The Paris Review, Ms. Bagley always remains humble. This is just how she was raised.

Growing up in Kentucky in a literary type home environment as well as a horse breeding family, Hallie Gay is sensitive to the beauty of detail in both words and form.

As a child, Hallie Gay loved cooking with her grandmother, Lily, and up until this day, cooking is one of her favorite hobbies as she finds it very relaxing. She also enjoys things such as playing tennis and newly washed sheets. It really is the little things that make her the happiest.

English has always been Hallie Gay’s first love, though. Ever since her first English class, she knew she wanted to follow the family legacy of becoming an English major. When she was just 11 years old she entered a short essay contest that was being held by Seventeen Magazine.

The rest of her story pretty much unfolded after those magical encounters.
